The Swedish Academy has given up on getting in touch with Bob Dylan, as the singer-songwriter has ignored calls since getting awarded the Nobel Prize in literature.
Dylan became the first musician to ever win the award following a surprising announcement Friday. The Swedish Academy has since tried to get ahold of Dylan to make arrangements for the annual award ceremony Dec. 10 in Stockholm, but without any success.
The academy still remains hopeful that Dylan will accept the award.
“I am not worried,” Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the academy, said in an interview with Swedish radio station Sveriges Radio. “I have a feeling that Bob Dylan will show up.”
Danius has been able to get in touch with people close to Dylan and has received friendly replies.
“I have called and sent emails to his closest collaborator and received very friendly replies,” she said. “For now, that is certainly enough.”
The academy has never struggled to get in touch with laureates in the past. French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre refused to accept the award in 1964, but had the courtesy of informing the academy of his decision.
Regardless of whether Dylan wants the award he will forever be listed as the 2016 laureate.
“If he doesn’t want to come, he doesn’t want to come,” Danius said. “There will still be a big party and the award is his, and that’s the important thing.”
