Malaysia has increased the capacity of its core internet exchange to support projected growth of internet usage until 2019.
MyIX, which operates the country’s internet exchange , increased the central node capacity from 40Gbps to 100Gbps.
In August 2016, peak internet data that peered over MyIX’s infrastructure reached 170.474Gbps, the highest in the country’s history. This equated to year-on-year growth of 57%.
“Throughout 2016, the peak points for each month have exceeded the 100Gbps mark,” said MyIX.
Smart city development, high smartphone adoption and the internet of things (IoT) are some of the tech trends driving up data traffic in Asean countries such as Malaysia, and regional governments want to take advantage of this digital revolution.
According to a recent report by Oxford Economics , each percentage point that mobile internet penetration rises in Southeast Asia adds US$1.5bn to the region’s gross domestic product (GDP), with the potential to add a million jobs by 2020.
At Malaysia’s recent internet peering forum – the first of its kind in the country – MyIX chairman Chiew Kok Hin said: “If Malaysia is to achieve a world-class internet ecosystem and internet peering hub, MyIX members must increase their cooperative spirit and work together in facilitating a more efficient internet traffic exchange.”
The forum attracted 130 participants, including internet service providers, content providers, hosting companies, datacentre operators, regulators, universities and network suppliers.
It was announced during the forum that Malaysia had attained a good regional position in IPv6 deployment, ahead regional peers such as Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Chiew said Malaysia had achieved a key milestone, with MyIX members accepting the need to work together to benefit the nation. “Such cooperation will pave the way towards a world-class internet peering network, and ultimately provide better internet service for all Malaysians,” he added.
