Sales of Donald Trump fright masks narrowly topped those of Hillary Clinton last week, according to a report by Spirit Halloween shops.
Spirit is a New Jersey-based novelty retailer with 1,200 seasonal stores scattered across the country.
“Our Cry Baby Trump mask was in the lead, with the #HBIC Hillary mask a close second, just one point behind,” said spokeswoman Trisha Lombardo. The latex likenesses sell for $12.99 each.
More striking numbers were posted by Rubie’s Costume Co. of New York City, which bills itself as the world’s largest manufacturer and supplier of Halloween costumes.
“Trump masks are outselling the Hillary masks 3-1,” said Howie Beige, executive vice president of Rubie’s.
The news might put a scare into Clinton supporters. For decades, sales of the rubber candidate disguises have forecast presidential election victories.
“In the past, it’s been a pretty good predictor,” Beige said. “It’s definitely worked for every single election since the Nixon era. “
But Beige believes the current election cycle may break the masks’ predictive pattern, for two reasons.
“Not everybody who buys a Trump mask intends to support him,” Beige said. “Many are buying it to mock him. “
His other hypothesis: Masquerading as Clinton is too much work.
“Ninety-eight percent of the buyers of full-face masks are men,” he said. “When they buy a Hillary mask, they have to ask themselves, ‘Am I putting on a dress or a pantsuit?’ “
If mask sales this year don’t hold their prognosticative power, there’s also the “Spirit Halloween Toilet Paper Index” to consider.
“Hillary is leading by a double-digit landslide, thanks to her supporters who’ve adorned their bathrooms with her TP portrait,” Lombardo said.
Something tells us that Lombardo may be planning to trick-or-treat as a political spin doctor.
