Quake struck in remote area of Kashgar prefecture on Thursday
Eight people were killed when an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 struck in China’s northwest Xinjiang region on Thursday, the state-run Xinhua news agency said, with photographs online also showing damaged buildings. The China Earthquake Administration said the quake occurred in the remote Taxkorgan county area of Kashgar prefecture at a depth of 8 km. Xinhua said in a microblog post 11 people were also injured. Xinjiang is frequently jolted by earthquakes, most of which cause little damage.
