“The Late Show” host James Corden delivered a heartfelt message to the people of Manchester, saying the city will “grow even stronger” as a result of the tragic terror attack that killed 22 people on Monday.
“While taping our show earlier tonight, we heard the horrific news coming out of Manchester in England. There had been an incident at Ariana Grande’s concert. We still have no real information about what is happening, all we know is the tragic news of multiple fatalities and many injuries, ” Corden said on Monday’s show.
He continued: “It shocks me every time we hear this sort of news that attacks like this can happen, and especially when there will be so many children at this concert tonight. Many of you won’ t have ever been to Manchester but you will definitely of heard of it.”
Corden then explained that Manchester is famous for “so many wonderful things” from great soccer teams to the band Oasis.
“But when I think of Manchester, the place that I know, I think of the spirit of the people there and I’ m telling you a more tight knit group of people you will be hard-pressed to find. Strong, proud, caring people with community at its core, ” Corden said. “My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Manchester tonight… we’ ll all go to bed holding our little ones even tighter this evening.”
The man believed to be the sole attacker died at the scene after setting off a homemade explosive device that killed 22 people and injured at least 50 more Monday night at Manchester Arena, officials said. Neither he nor any potential accomplices have been publicly identified.
On Tuesday, the BBC reported that the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement via IS channels on the messaging app Telegram.
