The company developed a version specifically designed for the unique needs of the Chinese government. Microsoft is making Windows 10 available in China as a “Government Edition” and will allow authorities to use China’s own encryption methods rather than Microsoft’s integrated security. The company has revealed it’s working with China Customs, the City of Shanghai and state-owned enterprise Westone Information Technology to trial its trimmed-down version of the platform, which removes some features including OneDrive and allows the government to use its own encryption algorithms. Microsoft explained it had worked “tirelessly” to address the government’s specialised needs and is “committed” to ensuring the operating system works for the country’s authorities. “It is an honor and privilege today to be in China—the center place of some of the world’s most life-changing inventions like paper, the abacus, and the world’s first movable type printing press, ” Terry Myerson, executive vice president of Windows and Devices Group, said in a . “These inventions have empowered each of us to be more creative and productive.” Lenovo is the first partner to work alongside Microsoft, and it will preinstall Windows 10 China Government Edition on devices for the government to use. “Every day our Chinese partners Lenovo, Xiaomi, and Huawei are building new devices and experiences that light up Windows 10 for our customers, ” Myerson added. “Together, we’ re inspiring a generation of creators to do more, create more, be more productive, and have more fun.”
