Big Little Lies was one of the hottest TV shows of 2017, and fans are dying for a Season 2. While the show was billed as a limited series event by HBO, its popularity may have garnered it a second season at the network, if the stars sign on to return.

According to Indiewire, HBO’s entertainment president, Casey Bloys, recently revealed at the ATX Television Festival that Big Little Lies may be returning for Season 2. Bloys confessed that Liane Moriarty, who wrote the novel that the series was based on, is currently thinking of some new ideas for a possible Season 2. This means that fans could see what becomes of the characters after what happens in the book without a sequel to the novel, which is interesting enough in itself.
However, Bloys confirmed that the show’s stars, Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoe Kravitz, would only return for a second season of Big Little Lies if the story was really, really good.
As many fans may remember, Big Little Lies centered around a group of women whose children all attended school together and were in the same kindergarten class. Things got heated between the moms when one of the children was accused of physically hurting another. Despite the classroom drama, the moms had a ton of juicy secrets they’ d been keeping from their families, friends, and significant others.
By the end of the series, it was revealed that Shailene Woodley’s character, Jane, had been raped resulting in the birth of her son, Reese Witherspoon’s on-screen alter ego, Madeline, had been cheating on her husband Ed, and that Nicole Kidman’s character, Celeste, had been suffering some serious mental and physical abuse at the hands of her husband Perry.
The shocking ending revealed the show’s biggest mystery, which was that Celeste’s husband, Perry, was the man who had raped Jane and fathered her son, Ziggy. After the revelation and Perry’s attack on Celeste at the school’s trivia night, Perry found himself dead when Bonnie, played by Zoe Kravitz, pushed him over a ledge to his death. The women all covered up for one another and the end of the series showed the ladies on the beach with all of their children looking happy and bonded together as a group.
Big Little Lies Season 2 could easily continue the story, focusing on Celeste and her recovery after losing her abusive husband and finding out that Jane’s son is her children’s brother. Jane and Celeste’s relationship would be very interesting to fans, who would most likely be chomping at the bit to tune in for a second season.
Of course, the rest of the women are leading scandalous lives as well. Season 2 could dive further into Madeline’s marriage to Ed and her ex-husband, Nathan, as well as with her kids. Perhaps Ed could find out about his wife’s infidelity, or Nathan could admit he still has feelings for his former wife. Fans of the book also know that Bonnie has an interesting backstory of abuse from her past, and a sophomore season could explore that as well.
There are so many possibilities looming for a second season of Big Little Lies, and fans are eager to find out if HBO will continue the series for another season.
