The Yamaguchi Prefecture city of Iwakuni expressed support Friday for a plan to bring dozens of U. S. carrier-based aircraft to the Marine Corps’ Iwakuni base under an agreement reached between the Japanese and U. S. governments over the realignment of U. S. forces in 2006.
Iwakuni Mayor Yoshihiko Fukuda said he decided to accept the plan amid the tense security situation involving North Korea, while vowing to ensure a favorable living environment for residents near the base, which is set to become one of the largest U. S. air bases in the Far East in terms of the number of aircraft to be stationed there.
The carrier-based aircraft will come from the U. S. Navy’s Atsugi air facility in Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo.
