Will Kathy Griffin’s career recover after posting violent photos that many took as a threat to President Trump?
While many react with shock and horror to comedian Kathy Griffin’s grotesque portrayal of President Trump, those who are familiar with her public presence know that this isn’ t the first time Griffin has offended audiences. While photographing a mock beheading of the president of the United States certainly tops the list, Griffin’s various off-color remarks throughout her career have served as a foundation for this latest infraction.
Kathy Griffin’s Bloody Trump Photo
According to the Inquisitr, Griffin posted the photos on Twitter on Tuesday and immediately faced a backlash from both conservatives and liberals against the violent images. The photos depict Kathy Griffin holding President Trump’s severed head with blood dripping from it. Even the most ardent critics of Donald Trump were not pleased. Chelsea Clinton, daughter of President Trump’s 2016 opponent Hillary Clinton, tweeted, “This is vile and wrong. It is never funny to joke about killing a president.”
Although Griffin apologized for creating and sharing the violent photos, CNN fired her on Wednesday from her gig hosting their yearly New Year’s Eve show, according to USA Today. Griffin’s co-host for the New Year’s special, Anderson Cooper, remarked in a tweet, “For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in. It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate.” Griffin also lost an advertising job with toilet stool company Squatty Potty, which suspended advertisements that featured the self-described D-list comedian.
But this is not the only time Griffin has lost jobs and faced criticism for her controversial actions.
Kathy Griffin’s Blasphemous Emmy Acceptance Speech
Us Weekly reports that in 2007, Kathy Griffin was publicly censured for comments she made during her acceptance of the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Program for her reality show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List. In her speech, she stated,
After the Catholic League condemned her statement, the Academy stated that her pre-taped speech would not be televised.
The Dakota Fanning Faux Pas
According to Entertainment Weekly, Kathy Griffin was under fire in 2005 for statements she made during the E! channel’s Golden Globes red carpet coverage. Among other off-color remarks, Griffin commented, “We did hear a rumor that little Dakota Fanning entered rehab today, and we wish her the best.” At the time, actress Dakota Fanning was only 10 years old, so many people who heard this comment were shocked and offended. E! issued an apology and even donated money to one of Dakota Fanning’s favorite charities as a way to make up for the awkward comment.
Re-Banned From The View For Insulting Barbara Walters
In 2008, Kathy Griffin was re-banned from The View after she apparently made offensive comments about host Barbara Walters, according to Access Hollywood. Griffin never revealed exactly what she said that ruffled so many feathers at The View. This was the second time she was banned from the show. The first ban occurred after she bad-mouthed the talk show during one of her stand-up routines.
Foul-Mouthed Octomom Joke At Apollo Kids’ Night
According to NewNowNext, Kathy Griffin was banned from the Apollo theater in Harlem after telling an offensive joke about Octomom Nadya Suleman in 2009. The joke was apparently about the many plastic surgeries Suleman has allegedly undergone, but also mentioned a slang term for female anatomy that was not welcome to the audience at Apollo Kids’ Night. After telling the joke, the band on stage started playing, signaling for her to leave, while an audience member shouted that she was “disrespecting the Apollo.”
Is This Time Different?
While all of her past transgressions were offensive to select groups and individuals, Kathy Griffin’s latest controversy has a wide variety of people from all over the political spectrum up in arms. The Secret Service even sent out a tweet on Tuesday that many think is a reference to the Trump mock beheading video. It reads, “Threats made against Secret Service protectees receive the highest priority of all of our investigations. #ProtectionNeverRests.” It remains to be seen whether Kathy Griffin’s career can recover after posting photos that many took as a threat to President Trump. If CNN’s actions are any indication, Kathy Griffin may finally leave the D-list and drop from fame altogether.
