Even Mr. Met has had enough.
After the Mets fell to the Brewers in an ugly 7-1 defeat at Citi Field Wednesday night, Mr. Met headed toward the tunnel dejected but not before turning around and flipping the bird to a fan in the stands.
“We apologize for the inappropriate action of this employee, ” the Mets said in a statement. “We do not condone this type of behavior. We are dealing with this matter internally.”
The video of Mr. Met’s angry actions were captured by Tony De Lucia and posted on Twitter where the fan stated he and his friends were leaning over the railing for a high-five and instead received a one-finger salute.
It has been a troublesome season for the Mets both on the field and off of it after entering the year with high expectations. After re-signing Yoenis Cespedes in the offseason and seemingly having an assortment of riches in the rotation, the Mets were considered favorites in the NL East.
Except the good feelings lasted about as long as it took Mr. Met to turn on his own team.
Injuries to Cespedes, Steven Matz and Noah Syndergaard have hindered the Mets while below-average performances from veterans such as Curtis Granderson and Asdrubal Cabrera have weighed on fans during the season’s first two months.
With a 23-28 record, the Mets currently reside in second place in a weak NL East but sit eight games back of the division-leading Nationals, which seemed to push the usually cheerful Mr. Met over the edge.
