ISLAMABAD – At least 123 people gathered around an oil tanker that overturned in eastern Pakistan were killed after it exploded and caught fire, police and rescuers said on Sunday morning.
The tanker crashed in the city of Bahawalpur after speeding before then exploding as local people started collecting oil spilling from the vehicle, police official Shafiq Ali told dpa.
Rescuers recovered at least 123 dead bodies after the explosion, some of them charred beyond recognition, said Deeba Shahnaz, spokeswoman for the provincial rescue service.
Another 90 people with injuries were being treated at the city’s Victoria Hospital, Shahnaz added.
