It appears that some Linux distros have started making their way to the Windows Store. The operating systems are available for Insiders right now, and will be generally available later this year.
At its Build 2017 developer conference last month, Microsoft announced that it is bringing SUSE, Ubuntu, and Fedora to the Windows Store. The surprise move appeared to be the latest byproduct of Microsoft’s pledge toward greater acceptance of the open-source community, with the company signing onto the Linux Foundation as a platinum member last year.
Now, it appears that some of these Linux distributions have started making their way to the Windows Store, at least for Insiders.
SUSE has released Linux Enterprise Server 12 and openSUSE Leap 42 in the Windows Store. It is important to note that both of these distros are available for Windows Insiders running the later preview builds – basically version 16190.0 or above. For the former, the developer recommends having 4GB of RAM, and for the latter, 2GB of RAM.
Both the downloads weigh around 200MB in size. The description for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 is as follows:
Meanwhile, the Store description of openSUSE Leap 42 can be viewed below:
Both the distributions will operate in sandboxed environments, but will reportedly have the capabilities of a full installation, without the need to dual-boot.
These Linux distributions will be generally available with the Fall Creators Update later this year, but if you’re a Windows Insider on a relatively recent build, you can test them out by downloading them from the Windows Store below.
