If you’ve ever wished you could float around the International Space Station, Google might just have made your dreams come true, to some extent, with the latest update to its Street View today.
If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring the vastness of space, those dreams might just have come true, to some extent. Google has just announced a new update to Google Street View, that will take you to the stars and back, and teach you a thing or two.
Rolling out today, users of the highly popular Google Street View can join the team of Astronauts on the International Space Station; not to mention drift around unsupervised, to explore all of the 15 rather cramped modules that make up the orbiter. Beyond that, Google has added several Points-of-Interest, that will explain what most of the equipment on the station does.
To make it even more exciting, these images were collected when the SpaceX Dragon capsule docked, so you’ll be able to see how cargo gets transported to and from the station all from the comfort of your desk. The viewfinder supports full 360-degree viewing angles, so it would most likely work better with something like a VR headset, but you can still somewhat experience it with just a keyboard and a mouse as well.

Google Street View was recently updated to include trips up Mount Everest, and NASA recently created a Martian version where you could see the planet from the point of view of the Curiosity Rover. Even though much of the station looks pretty much the same, it’s a reasonable simulation until Elon Musk gets us up there with affordable space flight.
