With virtual assistants popping up everywhere, one could assume that we have reached saturation point, but it seems that would be the wrong assumption with Lenovo announcing its entry into the market.
With new virtual assistants popping up with alarming frequency, one could assume that companies have realized that the market might be a bit oversaturated at this point. However, Lenovo doesn’t think so and has just announced its concept assistant named CAVA, which could take on the likes of Google Now and Cortana.
During its latest Lenovo Tech World event, the company announced the virtual assistant explaining several aspects to the product. According to Lenovo, CAVA is contextually aware, giving you relevant information during daily use. It also has AI-powered deep-learning face- and voice-recognition features that assist it in managing calendar events and other data. Beyond these features, it is assumed that it will do what one would expect from these digital helpers, once the company decides it’s ready to launch on consumer devices.
At the event, the firm also announced its entry into the VR/AR space with ‘daystAR’, a headset that comes with an ‘optical display’, 40-degree viewing angles and a so-called ‘independent vision processing unit’ that is completely untethered, much like the HoloLens that revolutionized the augmented reality market. Even though Lenovo didn’t go into much detail, it most likely functions like the aforementioned device from Microsoft. The company also announced a set of development tools in tandem named the ‘Lenovo AR Platform’, which it will make available to developers.
Samsung recently entered the virtual assistant market as well with its Bixby service, which launched with the company’s latest Galaxy flagship. However, with devices running Android already coming with a built-in assistant as standard, it remains to be seen how successful these additional offerings will be from Lenovo and its competitors.
Lenovo, which owns Motorola, is holding its annual #hellomotoworld event on July 25. The company is expected to reveal the Z2 Force handset, which leaked ahead of its scheduled release.
