Samsung and PayPal have come to a new agreement which will allow Samsung Pay users to spend from their PayPal accounts, and merchants will be able to use a PayPal service to take Samsung Pay payments.
Samsung has announced an “expanded strategic partnership” with PayPal. The new deal will allow Samsung Pay users to add PayPal as a payment method within Samsung Pay, therefore allowing it to be used anywhere Samsung Pay is accepted. Right now, PayPal via Samsung Pay is only available in the United States, but will expand to other countries soon.
Additionally, as part of the partnership, merchants will be able to use the PayPal service, Braintree, to accept Samsung Pay as a method of in-app payment, as well as in online transactions.
The move is quite a boon for Samsung, whose payment service already works with Near Field Communication (NFC) , as well as with Samsung’s patented Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology. By adding PayPal, it makes Samsung Pay even more convenient to use.
Users who connect their PayPal account to Samsung Pay will still continue to benefit from Samsung Pay’s value-added services, including gift cards, membership cards and loyalty cards.
PayPal has been on somewhat of a deal spree this past week. Last Wednesday, we reported that the payment service had struck a deal with Apple to be used as a payment provider across the Cupertino giant’s ecosystem.
