A caregiver was sentenced to five years in prison on Friday for stealing more than $125,000 from a 70-year-old Newport Beach man with dementia.
SANTA ANA – A caregiver was sentenced to five years in prison on Friday for stealing more than $125,000 from a 70-year-old Newport Beach man with dementia.
A jury in June found Guillermo Trujillo, 43, of Newport Beach guilty of felony theft and money laundering, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said Trujillo lived in an apartment above his victim on Balboa Island and began working as a caregiver for the man in November 2012 in exchange for free rent.
Trujillo, prosecutors said, went to various ATM machines to max out daily limits and withdrew more than $117,900 in all in unauthorized cash.
Trujillo also opened a joint account with the man’s name at Union Bank on Balboa Island and transferred money from the victim’s main account, prosecutors said.
A bank manager noticed suspicious transactions and alerted Adult Protective Services, which contacted the police.
In a statement read to the court, the victim’s niece said Trujillo took advantage of her uncle.
“What (he) lost from the theft of his funds was the ability to spend more time in his home on his island with his beloved dog Iggy, ” she said. “I believe the stress of having to leave his home and his dog advanced his decline.
“ (My uncle) is now in a full-care dementia facility and will be penniless and on Medicaid sooner because of the funds stolen from him.”
