Japan said Saturday that multiple short-range ballistic missiles launched by North Korea earlier in the day would not have a direct impact on Japan’s security, but the country’s defenses remained on high alert.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the missiles did not fall within Japan’s territory or exclusive economic zone.
However, Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said that Prime Minster Shinzo Abe instructed him to maintain high levels of alert to “protect the lives and property of the Japanese people.”
North Korea fired three short-range ballistic missiles at around, all of which ended in apparent failure, the U. S. military said.
Pyongyang’s latest, failed missile launches took place amid an annual joint military exercise between South Korea and the United States, which the North has condemned as a rehearsal for an invasion.
