The USS John S. McCain collided with a merchant vessel east of Singapore on Monday, just two months after another U. S. warship was involved in a fatal crash near Japan.

Search and rescue efforts are underway, the U. S. Navy said, with initial reports suggesting the guided-missile destroyer suffered damage to her port side. The Navy is examining the extent of the damage and injuries.
The collision occurred as the ship was transiting to a routine port visit in Singapore, the Navy said. It is currently sailing under its own power and heading to port, while Singapore authorities are offering assistance.
