U. S. cruises to capture Solheim Cup against Europe

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — The United States claimed its first Solheim Cup victory on home soil since 2009 on Sunday, turning a five-point lead from the night before into an emphatic 16½-11½ win at Des Moines Golf and Country Club.
Coming into Sunday singles needing the largest comeback in Solheim Cup history, European team captain Annika Sorenstam front-loaded her lineup in a bid to win the early momentum.
At the heart of the U. S. team’s victory was its superb play in fourballs on Friday and Saturday. Although the U. S. trailed Europe 4½-3½ in foursomes over the two days, its 7-1-0 record in fourballs — which included the first U. S. single-session sweep in history on Friday — built a lead that ultimately proved insurmountable.
The Iowa crowd turned out in force throughout the 2017 Solheim Cup. Tournament officials projected record-breaking attendances heading into the week and multiple players spoke glowingly about the size of the crowds. Official figures aren’t expected until next week, but early estimates peg the total at more than 20,000 people per tournament day.
