The GoPro Hero 6 will launch on 28 September. Here’s how to watch the live stream and get all the info on the latest rumours about price and specs.
The GoPro Hero 6 was never in doubt: CEO Nick Woodman confirm that the action camera would launch in 2017. Now, as we near the release date, images of the new gadget in retail packaging – plus images from GoPro’s web servers – are leaking out. We round up the rumours.

As the Hero 5 Black and Session were launched in late 2016, it wasn’t too hard to predict that the launch of the next generation wouldn’t be until the second half of the year.
GoPro has now confirmed the launch event with the following invite:
At this stage it appears GoPro will launch just one model: the flagship Hero 6 Black plus an updated Karma stabiliser. But it could also announce an updated Hero Session. Or even a second-generation drone. We’ll have to wait and see.
The event in San Francisco will be streamed live at 5pm UK time (9am Pacific Time) on Thursday 28 September and you’ll be able to see it at the top of this article from 4.30pm.
Here’s a summary of the expected specification:
The big update, then, is the ability to record 4K at 60 frames per second. That could be enough – along with the waterproof design – for owners of older cameras to upgrade. Plenty of enthusiasts prefer to shoot at more than 30fps, and that meant a Hero 4 Black or Silver was just as good as a Hero 5 Black since the 5 is limited to 30fps when recording in 4K.
What’s unclear is whether GoPro has managed to find a way to offer stabilisation at 4K, a feature missing on Hero 5 Black. According to a list of specs on Cnet, stabilisation is once again electronic rather than optical, so it’s likely the option will be greyed out when you select 4K on the Hero 6 Black.
The design appears to be the same as the Hero 5 Black (image from PhotoRumours):
Other photos of the retail packaging have emerged via The Verge, which indicate that there won’t be any delays: the camera could go on sale on the same day (28 September) as its announcement.
The side of the box shows that the ‘6 will be able to shoot 1080p at 240fps. Again, that’s twice the rate of the Hero 5 Black.
Here’s the Hero 4 Black against the Hero 5 Black – we’re certain that the new model will share the same dimensions as the Hero 5 Black so that it fits into cases and mounts (including in GoPro’s Karma drone).
According to info provided to The Verge, the Hero 6 Black will cost $649 in Canada, which could be US$499. Hopefully this won’t translate to £499, otherwise that is likely to be too rich for UK buyers. The Hero 5 Black costs £399 currently, and is said to be kept in the range once the Hero 6 arrives.
That means either the old model will get a price cut, or the new one will cost somewhere between £429 and £499.
