The Lions play the Giants on Monday Night Football. Here are the matchups and factors that will decide it.
Late last season was a terrible time for Stafford to try to beat this elite Giants secondary with a dislocated middle finger because it meant he’d have to do it without either of his top two running backs. Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick are both back from injury now, and although running the ball will be an immense challenge against Olivier Vernon and Damon “Snacks” Harrison, Riddick could turn out to be key in the passing game. Detroit has a diverse receiving corps, but the Giants have no holes in their secondary, offering a player to match up with anyone the Lions try to throw to on the outsides.
With a top-notch defensive backfield and a loaded defensive line, they like to hide their nondescript linebackers, and that’s where Riddick comes into play. He’s a shifty player who has been among the toughest to guard in the open field on passing plays. Detroit’s ability to isolate him on angle routes against linebackers could be a huge method of moving the ball in a game where doing so most other places will be a challenge.
