The latest on all of Major League Baseball’s remaining pennant races, as we sail toward the regular season finales on Oct. 1:
Wednesday’s big winner: The Minnesota Twins stayed on track in the postseason race, beating the Detroit Tigers 7-3. They hold a 3½-game lead for the second wild card over the Texas Rangers and the Los Angeles Angels.
Wednesday’s big loser: The Milwaukee Brewers not only had their aspirations to win the NL Central seemingly disappear, but they were also hurdled by the St. Louis Cardinals in the wild-card race. The Brewers, though, are still within striking distance of the No. 2 wild card, trailing the Colorado Rockies by two games.

Magic matters: The New York Yankees can clinch a postseason spot with a win over the Toronto Blue Jays or losses by the Angels and Rangers. New York trails the Boston Red Sox by four games in the AL East, but holds a 5½ lead over the Twins for the first AL wild-card spot.… The Arizona Diamondbacks can clinch a wild-card berth with a win over the Miami Marlins coupled with a loss by the Cardinals to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Today’s can’t-miss game: Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks squares off against Brewers lefty Brent Suter as the two clubs continue a pivotal four-game series. The Cubs hold a 5½-game lead over the Brewers for the NL Central title, and Milwaukee only has eight games remaining.
