The Gamecocks are 2-1 with winnable games on the horizon.
If South Carolina’s football team wins two-thirds of its games this year, it will finish 8-4. That’s probably a good bit of perspective coming off of the Gamecocks 23-13 loss to Kentucky.
South Carolina is 2-1 on the season, which taken as a standalone fact is not bad. The reason there is so much angst among Gamecocks fans is that the loss is right in the rearview mirror. And that the loss came against Kentucky, which has now beaten the Gamecocks four straight years.
Neither the loss, to a team that the season likely will show is not that good, nor the manner of the loss, sloppy, was acceptable.
“Very disappointed with how we played, especially with how we played the first two weeks,” head coach Will Muschamp said.
All of that being said, the Gamecocks still are in good shape if they can right the ship. There upcoming games, La. Tech at home, Texas A&M on the road and Arkansas at home, are winnable.
It’s been a tense few days in Columbia, starting with Saturday night, when audible boos could be heard during the team’s first home game. Talk radio and internet message boards were similarly salty Sunday and Monday, but it’s time for everyone to take a deep breath.
The season is not sunk.
“We just have to go back and regroup and go attack next week. That’s all you can do now,” quarterback Jake Bentley said. “We are going to watch the film. We are going to get better for it. This game is not necessarily going to determine outcomes later in the season. We just have to keep pushing.”
And the fans need to keep breathing. And stop booing.
