“But she’s a 10-year breast cancer survivor, and she’ll beat this, too… She is just a wonderful, kind, caring person.”
A Dana Point woman was recovering Tuesday after reconstructive surgery, her family waiting patiently for her to awaken two days after she was shot in the face by a mass killer during the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas.
Natalie Grumet, 37, an ultrasound technician at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, was reported in stable condition at a Las Vegas hospital following surgery to repair her shattered jawbone. Bullet fragments remain lodged in her face, Pearl Grumet, her mother-in-law, through tears from the hospital’s waiting room.
Pearl Grumet said she expects her daughter-in-law to awaken sometime early Wednesday, once sedatives wear off.
“She’s going to have to have multiple plastic surgeries,” Grumet said. “The doctor said they couldn’t close the wound up because there wasn’t enough tissue there to do that.”

The family spent much of the weekend together in Las Vegas, but Pearl Grumet and her husband returned home to San Dimas on Sunday while her two sons and their significant-others stayed behind to attend the music festival and hear Jason Aldean – one of Natalie’s favorite musicians.
Pearl Grumet learned Sunday night that her daughter-in-law was among the victims injured in the mass shooting, which killed at least 59 people, and booked the next flight out.
A GoFundMe account has been set up by family members to fly Natalie Grumet home for medical treatment, but doctors in Las Vegas said the trip was too risky. By Tuesday evening, they had raised nearly $68,000, which will go toward medical bills. The family is hoping she can be transported Friday to Mission Hospital, where a team of her colleagues are waiting to provide her medical treatment.
