For years, the idea that an iPhone gets slower over time and software upgrades has been one of the longstanding myths in the Apple community.
One study sought to bust that myth by using hundreds of thousands of iPhones as its test subject.
Futuremark, a Finnish company that builds hardware performance benchmarks, collected more than 100,000 benchmarks from iPhone 5S, 6,6S and 7 over the past year to see if there was a noticeable drop in performance after iOS upgrades.
Its conclusion? There is no grand Apple conspiracy to slow down the iPhone to make you upgrade.
“Our benchmarking data shows that, rather than intentionally degrading the performance of older models, Apple actually does a good job of supporting its older devices with regular updates that maintain a consistent level of performance across iOS versions,” wrote Futuremark in their study.
Futuremark looked at the performances of the central processing unit — commonly called as the brains of the iPhone — and the graphics processing unit, which focuses on processing graphics-related calculations.
