Tech evolution at its best: iPhone improving significantly with every new generation and overhauled processors
In most of the cases, Apple also releases some performance figures to support its statements, but the company typically compares a new model only with its predecessor.
But a super-quick comparison between the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 8, which are basically the oldest and the newest models that are still being supported by iOS 11 today, shows just how much performance has improved in the last few years and how fast the latest-generation iPhone is compared to older ones.
According to GeekBench data, the iPhone 5s, which landed in late 2013, scored 1268 points in the single-core CPU test and 2133 points in the multi-core benchmark. This was obviously impressive at that time, but the iPhone 8 takes those figures to a completely new level with a score of 4205 and 10006 points, respectively.
This means the iPhone 8 is 373 percent faster than the iPhone 5s, and while this shows how Apple managed to improve performance in 4 years, it also highlights the optimization work that the company does on iOS to support devices with so different performance figures.
The comparison also puts the late-2013 15-inch MacBook Pro side by side with the mid-2015 15-inch model, but this time the difference isn’t so substantial. The older model scored 4169 and 13893 points in the single-core and multi-core tests, respectively, while the newer one got 4649 and 15665 points. This is an increase of just 12 percent in CPU performance.
Obviously, comparing iPhones with MacBooks doesn’t make much sense, but these statistics show that Apple has apparently focused more on the smartphone market than on PCs and laptops. This isn’t entirely surprising, though lack of major hardware overhauls on the MacBook could translate to slower sales in a market where others, including long-time rival Microsoft, continue to innovate.
