The storm could approach Louisiana as a hurricane this weekend.
How strong will it be when it hits?
The storm is forecast to strengthen to a hurricane, but forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said the intensity is still uncertain.
However, the National Weather Service’s Slidell office said Southeast Louisiana and coastal Mississippi should plan for the following based on the current forecast:
– Sustained tropical-storm-force winds possible, most likely starting Saturday night.
– Heavy rainfall: 2-4 inches with locally higher amounts possible, especially along and to the right of the storm’s center. The heaviest rain will be Saturday and Sunday.
– Storm surge: tides are already higher than normal and additional rises are expected this weekend, especially on the east and southeast-facing shores.
