The incident occurred at about 7 p.m. Wednesday near U. S. 131 and Heimbach Road, a few miles north of Three Rivers.
CENTREVILLE, MI – Two men who were arrested following a police-involved shooting Wednesday were arraigned Thursday on attempted murder and drug charges related to that incident.
Lloyd Roger O’Connor, 35, of Marcellus, and Jordan Bradley Raymond, 32, of Menominee, were each arraigned Thursday, Nov. 2, in St. Joseph District Court on one count of attempted murder, one count of possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, and three counts of assaulting, resisting and obstructing a police officer.
The charges stem from a Wednesday, Nov. 1, incident in which an undercover police officer – part of the St. Joseph County Area Narcotics Unit — was allegedly set to buy drugs from the men.
Officers said a shot was fired and one of the suspects was injured after they attempted to strike the officer with their vehicle.
The incident occurred at about 7 p.m. near U. S. 131 and Heimbach Road, less that 3 miles north of Three Rivers.
“One officer was in an unmarked vehicle waiting at the John Deere dealership for the target vehicle to arrive,” according to a press release issued by the office of St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough. “The other officers were waiting a short distance away in marked patrol vehicles to assist when the target arrived.”
According to the information, the officer in the unmarked car identified himself as a police officer after the suspects’ vehicle arrived.
“The target vehicle then slowly drove past the unmarked vehicle and when police attempted to stop the vehicle, the target vehicle abruptly reversed and struck the unmarked police vehicle,” according to the prosecutor’s news release. “The target vehicle then spun around and sped towards him in an attempt to hit him.”
At that point, the officer fired one shot with his service pistol. The shot went through the windshield of the vehicle and struck the driver in the right shoulder area. Other deputies responded and made arrests.
The injured suspect was transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, where he was treated for his injuries and released. He was then transported to the St. Joseph County Jail. His passenger was immediately transported to the county jail.
The officer who fired that shot suffered minor injuries, according to authorities. He was treated at Three Rivers Health and released.
According to McDonough’s office, O’Connor continued to be held Thursday in the St. Joseph County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond. He is scheduled for a pretrial examination at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 14, and a preliminary examination in court at 1 p.m. on Nov. 21.
Raymond was jailed in lieu of $500,000 bond and was scheduled to reappear in court on the same dates as O’Connor.
