A 6-year-old boy and his father who were hit by a car in Westwood Sunday afternoon remain in critical condition.
A 6-year-old boy who was hit by a car in Westwood Sunday afternoon has died, school officials said.
Westwood Public Schools said Edward “Eddie” Thomson, a first-grader at the Sheehan School, passed away Tuesday from injuries sustained in a crash that seriously injured him and his father.
The crash happened at around 3 p.m. as a father, his two children and their dog were in a crosswalk by Pond Street and Lakeshore Drive. The dog, Sammie, was also injured. The daughter was not injured.
“Eddie passed away this morning, but we are going to donate his organs to help other families never have to go through this,” Thomson’s mother said in a message shared with the school community. “There will be services held at a later date. Rob (Eddie’s father) remains hospitalized. I don’t know for how long, but he has a lengthy recovery ahead of him.”
Witnesses said the driver of the car said she couldn’t see the people because of sun glare. Police said the crash appears to be accidental, but remains under investigation.
Counselors from Westwood Youth and Family Services will be available Tuesday night at Sheehan Elementary School to provide support and consultation to parents and guardians.
A GoFundMe account has been set up by friends and relatives to help the family.
