The Birmingham News, The Mobile Press-Register and The Huntsville Times all featured an editorial arguing for the election of Doug Jones, a Democrat, to Attorney General Jeff Sessions former Senate seat in light of accusations of various women accusing Moore of sexual misconduct when they were minors, CBS News reported Sunday .
The editorial, written by the editorial board of parent company AL.com, called the allegations “horrifying” and told voters not to accept Moore’s alleged predatory behavior and instead choose to take a stand against it.
“How can we look our neighbors, our parishioners, our colleagues, our partners, or our children in the eyes and tell them they are worth less than ensuring one political party keeps a Senate seat?” the board wrote, adding that they were formally endorsing Jones . “How can we expect young Alabamians to have faith in their government or their church, when its leaders equivocate on matters as clear cut as sexual abuse?”
A Washington Post report first broke the news of Moore allegedly having sexual contact with a 14 year-old, while another woman came forward to allege that Moore attempted to sexually assault her when she was 16 years-old. Moore has continued to deny the allegations.
The AL.com editorial board also urged voters to be “people of principle” and not allow Moore to obtain a high office due to the allegations.
“By the various misdeeds, miscalculations and mistakes of its voters and leaders, Alabama has left itself with few options. Alabamians must show themselves to be people of principle, reject Roy Moore and all that he stands for,” they wrote. “There is only one candidate left in this race who has proven worthy of the task of representing Alabama. He is Doug Jones.”
