The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has won its first Game of the Year 2017 award at the Golden Joystick Awards.
The Golden Joystick Awards were held today, awarding 25 different categories, including the coveted Game of the Year. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild won Ultimate Game of the Year 2017, beating out second place’s Horizon Zero Dawn and third place’s Persona 5.
The Golden Joystick’s Ultimate Game of the Year award is decided by anyone that wishes to vote online. Breath of the Wild also went home with Best Audio, Nintendo Game of the Year 2017, and Critics’ Choice. Nintendo EPD – developers of Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey – walked away with Best Studio for this year.
In 2016, the Ultimate Game of the Year was awarded to Dark Souls 3, while the Most Wanted future game was Mass Effect: Andromeda. The winner of this year’s Most Wanted upcoming game is The Last of Us Part 2. The Final Fantasy series was inducted into the Hall of Fame, following Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft last year.
For PlayStation Game of the Year 2017, Horizon Zero Dawn took the award home, also nailing Best Storytelling. Horizon Zero Dawn’s Ashly Burch – voice of Aloy – added to the accolades for the premier first-party PlayStation title with the Breakthrough and Best Gaming Performance awards.
On the Xbox side, Cuphead took the Xbox Game of the Year 2017 award in a landslide. PC Game of the Year 2017 was given to the massive online hit PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Rounding out the Golden Joystick platform awards was Handheld/Mobile Game of the Year 2017, which was awarded to Pokemon Sun and Moon.
