Cyberpunk 2077 will not be ‘greedy’ like other games, says developer CD Projekt RED in response to fan concerns that its game will include microtransactions.
When Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt RED said that its game needed online features in order to be successful, many fans of the upcoming game were worried. Fans feared that the developer would use the online features as a way to put microtransactions and loot boxes in the game.
CD Projekt RED has now taken to Twitter to address those concerns, telling fans to “worry not.” The developer said that Cyberpunk 2077 would be more along the lines of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and will be a “huge single player, open world, story-driven RPG.” The developer also promised that its new game would have “no hidden catch” and would offer “honest gaming” as players can get what they paid for.
CD Projekt RED also said that it would “leave greed to others” and many have taken this to be a dig at Star Wars Battlefront 2. Battlefront 2‘s microtransactions were removed due to huge backlash and ‘pay to win’ fears and that game’s loot boxes are now being investigated for gambling. The controversy surrounding Battlefront 2‘s business model is also one of the reasons why Cyberpunk 2077 fans were worried about the game’s online features.
Although it’s not an outright confirmation, CD Projekt RED’s Twitter reply does seem to suggest that Cyberpunk 2077 will not have any microtransactions or loot boxes. With The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, CD Projekt RED released multiple post-launch DLC packs which proved to be incredibly popular with players and were very lucrative for the company. In lieu of microtransactions, Cyberpunk 2077 could receive additional downloadable content after launch in order to support the game and its developer.
The social media response will be reassuring to all of those fans who are worried that the sci-fi RPG will allow players to get ahead in the game just by paying. Even if the developer has not explicitly stated that its game won’t include microtransactions, it is at least confirming that players will be able to access to everything in the game just by paying for it upon entry. Nothing in the game will be locked behind microtransactions.
The concern about ‘paywalls’ has been one of the major reasons behind the microtransaction and loot box controversy. Players think that it’s unfair that players should have an advantage over others just because they can spend a little extra. It sounds as though Cyberpunk 2077 will avoid doing that. Fans can now go back to feeling excited about its gameplay and its character classes instead of fretting over its business model.
Cyberpunk 2077 is currently without an official release date and has yet to be announced for specific platforms.
