This year, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade started out as it normally does with live performances from some of the best Broadway shows. Everything was as it should be until the cast of SpongeBob SquarePants the Broadway Musical took the stage. That’s right, I said SpongeBob SquarePants the musical, and let’s just say the minute we saw the cast everyone was scratching their heads in confusion. The SpongeBob we all love was not a sponge at all, but rather a man! People were immediately posting on Twitter, and it’s safe to say SpongeBob SquarePants at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade sure had everyone talking.
The cast of the adaptation performed their song “Bikini Bottom Day” and instead of wearing full costumes, we saw human interpretations of the characters we love. So, basically instead of the same square sponge you might see walking around Times Square, we got a human-shaped man in regular pants. If you’re not expecting it, the sight will surely shock the Thanksgiving stuffing right out of you.
It wasn’t just SpongeBob.
Patrick, Sandy, and even Squidward were not who we remember, and Twitter was not having it.
