Detroit police are looking for a person of interest related to the fatal shooting of a 3-year-old boy in Detroit the evening of Dec. 6.
DETROIT, MI – Detroit police are speaking to a person of interest related to the fatal shooting of a 3-year-old boy in Detroit the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 6.
According to a Facebook post by the Detroit Police Department, 22-year-old Demetrius L. Peels turned himself in at 2 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7 after police put out his photo and said they were looking to talk with him.
Police said Peels carried a child with a gunshot wound to the face out of a residence Wednesday night and disappeared from the scene after leaving the child in the care of emergency medical responders.
In a video posted to the department’s Facebook page, Assistant Chief Arnold Williams said the incident took place in the 11000 block of Rossiter around 7 p.m.
The 3-year-old was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and died as a result of the injuries, Williams said.
Police spoke to the boy’s mother, who told them there was some conflict with neighbors and shots were fired outside of the residence, but Williams said in the video that evidence found at the scene does not corroborate her story.
“We came to the scene and nothing the mother said was confirmed by the evidence we have here at the scene. It looked like it happened inside,” Williams said. “We do have information that the mother was in that apartment along with a 1-year-old child and the 3-year-old victim and her boyfriend.”
The mother’s boyfriend was identified as Peels, who is described as a black male, 5 feet, 9 inches, weighing around 175 pounds. He is not the father of the 3-year-old victim, Williams said.
Detroit police are asking for Peels to turn himself in for questioning, and said he does have a criminal record.
