Fast-moving Creek fire threatens homes in Sylmar area, burns more than 2,500 acres

Los Angeles County firefighters were battling a 100-acre brush fire in Kagel Canyon near Sylmar, fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds.
Los Angeles County firefighters were battling a 1,000-acre brush fire Tuesday morning near Sylmar, fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds.
The Creek fire broke out off Little Tujunga Canyon Road around 4 a.m. and was threatening homes north of the 210 Freeway.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department was ordering evacuations in unincorporated areas. The Los Angeles Police Department was handling evacuations in parts of Slymar and Lakeview Terrace.
A large group of firefighters was on the scene, and up to eight water-dropping helicopters were hitting the fire, trying to slow its progress.
The blaze comes as firefighters are dealing with a fast-moving, wind-fueled wildfire that swept into the city of Ventura, burning 31,000 acres, destroying homes and forcing 27,000 people to evacuate. About 150 structures — including at least one large apartment complex — were consumed by flames, and many more were threatened as the fire crept about a quarter-mile from Ventura City Hall.
According to thr LAFD, mandatory evacuations were called for in:
–Kagel Canyon
— Trailer park in Lopez Canyon
–Arroyo St north of 210 Freeway
–Mobile home park top of Maclay Street
— Pacoma Wash west of Sayre St
–Edlridge and Hubbard streets
Voluntary evacuations were called:
— East of Vetrans Park to Pacoima Canyon, between Sayre and Polk streets
–North of the 210 Freeway, between Polk and Bledsoe streets.
— Between Bledsoe and Roxford streets.
–Between Roxford Street and Glenoaks Boulevard.
–Between Glenoaks and Filbert street.
— Filbert to 5/14 Freeway.
Evacuation centers have been set up at the Sylmar Recreation Center, 13109 Borden Avenue and Sunland Senior Center, 8640 Fenwick Street.
