The former Michigan congressman becomes the U. S. ambassador to the Netherlands
WASHINGTON — Former U. S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra of Michigan was sworn in Monday as the U. S. ambassador to the Netherlands.
Hoekstra, a Republican who lives in Holland, Mich., was confirmed by the U. S. Senate on a voice vote in November. During last year’s presidential campaign, he was a key surrogate for President Donald Trump’s winning effort in Michigan.
Hoekstra was born in the Netherlands but moved to the U. S. at a young age. He represented west Michigan’s 2nd Congressional District from 1993 to 2011, rising to become chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

He also ran unsuccessful races for governor and the U. S. Senate since leaving office.
Hoekstra was sworn in as ambassador in a ceremony at the White House.
