“North Korea is a terrifying prison…”
Because Kim Jong Un — and his father before him — have kept such a tight leash on the media and the people of North Korea, the Western world knows very little about what happens within North Korea’s borders.
What is known often comes from those fleeing the country or defecting from the North Korean military — and nearly all of it is terrifying.
Several recent cases have brought some particularly disturbing details to light.
A North Korean soldier, shot several times as he made a break for the safety of South Korea at the Demilitarized Zone, was found to be riddled with intestinal parasites and showed signs of extreme malnutrition.
Ji Hyeon-A, who escaped to South Korea in 2007, spoke before the U. N. at an event titled “The Terrifying Experience of Forcibly Repatriated North Korean Women.”
Fox News reported:
Ji Hyeon-A was repatriated three times to North Korea after she was caught in China. She finally escaped to South Korea and spoke of her horrifying experiences.
She described how North Korean women who got pregnant in China were forced to have abortions.
“Pregnant women were forced into harsh labor all day,” she said. “At night, we heard pregnant mothers screaming and babies died without ever being able to see their mothers.”
The reason for the forced abortion is a North Korean law that does not allow mixed-race babies — and when a repatriated woman is found to be pregnant, since the purity of the baby’s race cannot be guaranteed, abortion is the logical choice.
Ji Hyeon-A was forced to endure that pain herself because the third time she was caught in China, she was three months pregnant. She was taken to a local police station and forced to undergo an abortion without any medication:
“My first child passed away without ever seeing the world, without any time for me to apologize.”
As she told her own harrowing story, she called on China to stop sending people back to North Korea when they are caught, claiming that the Chinese know what will happen to those people once they are repatriated.
She explained that many went to prison camps, where starvation was commonplace. The dead bodies were then fed to the prison’s guard dogs.
“North Korea is a terrifying prison and the Kims are carrying out a vast massacre and it takes a miracle to survive there.”
China, meanwhile, had moved earlier that same day to stop a Security Council meeting that was to address the topic of human rights violations in North Korea. Russia and Bolivia supported China’s motion, but it failed, and the meeting took place, convened by Japan.
