A man and a woman died Monday when their SUV ran off a Durham street, struck a tree and caught fire, police said.
Durham, N. C. — A man and a woman died Monday when their SUV ran off a Durham street, struck a tree and caught fire, police said.
The Jeep was southbound on North Roxboro Street at about 2:30 p.m. when the crash occurred.
A Durham police officer responded quickly and tried to remove the two people inside the SUV, but the vehicle caught fire and was fully engulfed, according to police. The officer used two fire extinguishers but was unable to put the fire out.
The two people were pronounced dead at the scene. Police haven’t released their identities, but the said they believe they were local.
The SUV had been rented from Enterprise.
Several lanes of North Roxboro Street were closed between Macwood Road and Plantation Drive after the crash.
