Xiaomi has officially unveiled its newest entry-level smartphones, the Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus. These smartphones succeed last year’s ultra-popular Redmi 4 and Redmi 4 Prime. While anyone would expect a mild spec bump, including a slightly faster processor and a higher resolution camera, in newer entry-level phones, Xiaomi has surprised everyone by throwing in 18:9 screens with minimal bezels. There’s a newer sensor for the rear-facing camera and a front-facing flash for selfies. Let’s check out the pricing all the details about these new smartphones.
The Redmi 5 is priced at CNY 799 (around Rs. 7,793) for the 2GB RAM + 16GB storage variant and CNY 899 (around Rs. 8,768) for the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant in China. The Redmi 5 Plus will retail for CNY 999 (about Rs. 9,744) and CNY 1,299 (around Rs. 12,670) for 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variants, respectively in the country. Both variants will be sold in China starting December 12. The company will most probably launch it in India in May or June next year considering that Xiaomi upgrades its phones in India once every year and the Redmi 4 was launched in May 2017.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus feature 18:9 screens, but there’s a difference in the screen size. The Redmi 5 has a 5.7-inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels, while the Redmi 5 Plus has a 6-inch (5.99-inch, to be exact) IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. Screens on both the phones have 1000:1 contrast ratio and 450 nits brightness. The Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus have a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The rear-facing camera has 1.25µm pixels, phase-detection autofocus, f/2.2 aperture, single-LED flash, and Full HD video recording. The front-facing camera has a fixed-focus lens and a soft-LED flash. The phones have an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, gyro, hall sensor, and a proximity sensor.
Both phones run MIUI 9 based on Android 7.0 Nougat. The Redmi 5 uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor, 2GB or 3GB of RAM, and 16GB or 32GB of internal storage. The Redmi 5 Plus uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of 64GB of internal storage space. Both phones have a microSD card slot for storage expansion. Connectivity-wise, the smartphones have a dual-SIM card slot, 4G LTE cellular radios, GPS, dual-band Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.2, an IR port, and a microUSB 2.0 port. The Redmi 5 comes packed with a 3300mAh battery, while the Redmi 5 Plus uses a 4000mAh battery. Both phones have rear-facing fingerprint readers as well. The Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus will be available in Black, Blue, Gold, and Rose Gold colour variants.
