Like you follow people, Instagram will now let you follow hashtags.
Like you follow people, Instagram will now let you follow hashtags. The Facebook-owned photo-sharing app introduces a new feature which will now let users follow their favorite hashtag as well — much like how they follow their friends and family members. This is yet another way that Instagram is trying to make your posts more discoverable to other users on the social media platform.
Instagram, via a blog post on Wednesday, announces the introduction of this new follow hashtag feature. The social media giant — explaining the importance of the new feature notes, “Today we’re introducing the ability to follow hashtags, giving you new ways to discover photos, videos and people on Instagram. Now it’s even easier to stay connected with the interests, hobbies, passions, and communities you care about.”
The new feature works in a similar as you follow someone. Likewise, you follow someone on Instagram, by clicking on the “follow” button next to profile, it’s the same with the hashtag as well. All you need to do is, type the hashtag you want to follow, say, enter #Kolkata on the search bar — there will be a list of hashtags related to Kolkata, click on the one that you wish to follow.

On clicking the hashtag, Instagram will show a “follow” button next to hashtag. To follow the hashtag, you need to click on the follow button. On following the hashtag, you’ll begin seeing top posts from that hashtag in your feed and also some of the latest stories in your stories bar. Like you can follow a certain hashtag, you may also unfollow a hashtag at any given time.
“To give you more ways to find hashtags you might like, you can check out the hashtags other people follow in their profiles,” notes Instagram. This new follow hashtag feature does respect your privacy settings. This means, if your account is private, the hashtags you follow will only be visible to your followers.
Meanwhile, some reports suggest that Instagram is testing Direct, a standalone messaging app – called Direct which will work in a similar manner as to Facebook Messenger. The Direct app is said to remove the inbox tab from the core app and give it its own platform, much like what Facebook did with Messenger. However, there are no official words from Instagram on this app — Direct as of yet.
