Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Sunday said President Trump and the Republicans have “played” the government shutdown to their advantage.
Gingrich, a Georgia Republican, said the Democrats erred in opposing a spending bill to keep the government open with their demand to protect the Obama-era program that shields young immigrants brought to the United States by their parents from deportation.
“This is not what the Democrats hoped for. And I think President Trump has played this pretty well,” Gingrich told John Catsimatidis on his AM 970 radio show.
Gingrich, who was involved in two government shutdowns when he was in Congress, said the Democrats will eventually tell Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer to give in because Trump and his White House Chief of Staff John Kelly are “determined’ not to give him a win.
“The attitude right now in the administration is that they won’t give [Schumer] anything because they think he has made a huge mistake,” Gingrich said. “When the term, the ‘Schumer Shutdown,’ begins to catch on, you don’t have any sense of people [in the administration] who are inclined to back off.”
He said eventually Democrats will say: “We can’t keep doing this.”
