The 641-horsepower Lamborghini is billed as the fastest SUV ever
Lamborghini showed its blindingly fast Urus super-SUV for the first time in North America as part of the Detroit auto show Monday night, marking the high-end sports car maker’s first foray into the crowded U. S. sport utility market.
The Urus, which starts at $200,000, sports a 4.0-liter V-8 twin-turbo engine that generates 650 horsepower. The company said the 2019 model is capable of accelerating from zero to over 60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds. The SUV has a top speed of 189 miles per hour, making it the fastest SUV available, according to Lamborghini.
“When we started to think about a third model in our model range, we were thinking that the body type of SUV was the right one to have all the characteristics…to have something that is keeping the DNA of a Lamborghini,” said Federico Foschinio, chief commercial officer for Lamborghini, in an interview with The Detroit News.
“What is important is this car has been engineered with the target to have two souls. One is the soul of a super sports car. We have all the characteristic of a super sports car. On the other side, we have to have a car that could give another user profile that is more versatile, family-orientated, adventure-orientated, different-ground orientated. At the end of the day we were able to mix this all together in a car that is outstanding.”
A four-wheel-drive system with active torque-vectoring and four-wheel steering helps keep it between the lines. Carbon ceramic brakes, adaptive air suspension and active roll-stabilization are part of the package. The Urus has several driving modes to keep it tractable on the road and the race course.
The name Urus, by the way, derives from one of the wild ancestors of today’s domestic cattle.
The vehicle, which premiered in Italy in December, goes on sale this spring.
