Punk’s not dead, they say. But if it were, craft beer and fresh tortillas might be a good way to revive it.
‘90s punk rock bands The Offspring and Pennywise announced Monday they’re coming to Sacramento for Sabroso Craft Beer, Taco & Music Festival from 1-9 p.m. on Sunday, April 8 at Papa Murphy’s Park in Cal Expo. The fiesta drew 8,500 people to Doheny State Beach in Dana Point last year before expanding to Sacramento, Albuquerque, Portland, Denver, Tucson and Auburn, Wash. in 2018.
The Offspring’s headlining set will be introduced by Pennywise, Los Kung Fu Monkeys, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, The Vandals and Unwritten Law. As guitarists shred away on stage, masked lucha libre wrestlers will grapple with each other while sud-sipping attendees play lawn games at another festival section.
World champion competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi set a world record in besting fellow bottomless pits Molly Schuyler – a Yuba County resident – and Jesse Pynnonen by downing 159 tacos in 10 minutes last year, eclipsing his 2015 record by 15. There’s no word yet if competitive eaters will be back at this year’s event.
Those interested in going at a slower pace than Kobayashi might want to splash some “Gringo Bandito,” The Offspring lead singer Dexter Holland’s brand of hot sauce, atop their carne asada or carnitas. Vendors’ top taco creations will be awarded Sabroso’s “Best In Show” honors by a panel of judges.
More than 100 craft beers will be on tap from local producers such as New Glory Craft Brewing, Sactown Union Brewery, Claimstake Brewing and Heretic Brewery Company as well as others from around the country. The spigots close off at 4 p.m. when the 21+ event becomes open to all ages.
Tickets, which start at $29.50 plus fees, go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. on Sabroso’s website. VIP tickets including an extra hour of beer tasting, private bathrooms and extra taco vendors start at $99.50.
