Cruz will be tried as an adult and could receive the death penalty if the jury unanimously recommends that.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said Monday that he believes the alleged shooter in last week’s Florida high school shooting should get the death penalty for his actions.
Rubio was asked during an interview with CBS Miami if he thinks Nikolas Cruz, who was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder after the shooting last week, should be executed.
“Obviously, I mean, everyone — I would imagine that most people would say the answer to that is yes,” Rubio said. He followed, when pressed, saying that he personally believes “the answer is yes.”

The senator did, however, add that he has concerns about the death penalty.
“It’s a tough thing to answer because I have concerns about the death penalty, not in a case like this. I have concerns in the broader sense about how not everyone gets equal representation in death panels,” Rubio said. “But in this particular case, it’d be hard to argue against the death penalty.”
19-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in south Florida last Wednesday, killing 17 people and wounding 16 others. Cruz’s motives are still unknown, however, reports indicate that he had exhibited disturbing behavior in the past.
Jim Gard, a math teacher who taught Cruz last year, said the shooter had a history of threatening other students and that he’d heard Cruz wasn’t allowed on campus with a backpack.
Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel told press that Cruz’s social media presence further evidenced his history of “very, very disturbing” behavior.
Cruz’s digital footprint included posting slurs against blacks and Muslims, and included several threatening comments on Youtube.
“I wanna die Fighting killing a s**t ton of people,” one of the posts read, according to CNN. Others include: “I whana shoot people with my AR-15,” and “I am going to kill law enforcement one day they go after the good people.”
In September, a vlogger on Youtube reported a comment posted by a user named Nikolas Cruz, which said, “Im going to be a professional school shooter,” to the FBI. The agency admitted last week that it failed to follow proper protocol after receiving the tip.
Charges were filed against Cruz on Thursday. According to Business Insider, Cruz will be tried as an adult and could receive the death penalty if the jury unanimously recommends that.
