Taiwanese smartphone maker Asus has launched the ZenFone 5 series which includes ASUS ZenFone 5Z, ZenFone 5, and ZenFone 5 Lite on Tuesday at MWC 2018. ZenFone 5Z and ZenFone 5 are the first-ever models to have Artificial Intelligence (AI) and feature “all-screen” displays with a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio.
ZenFone 5Z is the flagship smartphone from Asus. It sports a 6.2-inch full-HD+ (1080×2246 pixels) display with an 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The display also supports the DCI-P3 colour gamut, Asus’ Blue-light eye care filter, and a 2.5D-curved glass on top of it. Also, it has a screen-to-body ratio of 90 percent, they say.
At the heart, there lays a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC with the AIE (Artificial Intelligence Engine) and Adreno 630 GPU. It is powered by a 3300mAh battery that supports AI Charging tech through USB Type-C port. It has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage in the base model, a middle of the line model with 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, going all the way up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage in the top model, which is impressive. The storage is also expandable via a microSD card (up to 2TB).
The ASUS ZenFone 5Z sports a dual rear camera setup, with the primary camera sporting a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor coupled with a f/1.8 aperture, 83-degree field of view, 24mm equivalent focal length in 35mm film camera, and a Softlight LED flash. The secondary camera on the rear is coupled with the 8-megapixel sensor, a 120-degree wide-angle lens, a f/2.2 aperture, and a 12mm equivalent focal length in a 35mm film camera. The front camera bears an 8-megapixel resolution, with a f/2.0 aperture, 84-degree field of view, and a 24mm equivalent focal length in a 35mm film camera. There is 3-axis EIS available for both the front and rear cameras, as well as a Face Unlock feature, and real-time beautification features.
Audiophiles will also get features like dual 5-magnet speakers with dual NXP smart amplifiers, a PMIC internal dual amplifier, triple internal microphones with noise reduction, Hi-Res Audio (192KHz/ 24-bit standard audio output on HRA certified earbuds) support, as well as DTS Headphone: X support. It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack.
It will be available in Midnight Blue and Meteor Silver colour variants.
ZenFone 5 is almost the replica of ZenFone 5Z. Major differences are seen in SoC, GPU, storage, and RAM departments. It is powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, coupled with 4GB or 6GB of RAM and the Adreno 509 GPU. It will be available in just one inbuilt storage variant i.e. 64GB. Rest all specification and colour options are same.
Here, ZenFone 5 Lite sports a 6-inch full-HD+ (1080×2160 pixels) IPS display, with an 80.3 percent screen-to-body ratio, and the Asus Blue-light eye-care filter.
This phone will come in two SoC-specific variants — one sporting the Snapdragon 430 octa-core SoC with Adreno 505 GPU, and the other sporting the Snapdragon 630 SoC with Adreno 508 GPU. There are also RAM and storage variants — 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage / 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. The storage is expandable via microSD card (up to 400 GB) with its own dedicated card slot. It is powered by a 3,300mAh battery which uses a micro USB port for charging/data syncing purposes.
It sports a dual rear camera setup, with the primary rear camera sporting a 16-megapixel sensor, f/2.2 aperture, 80-degree field of view, PDAF, and LED flash. The secondary camera sports an 8-megapixel sensor and 120-degree wide-angle lens. It also sports a dual front camera setup — the primary front camera bears a 20-megapixel Sony IMX376 sensor with a f/2.0 aperture, an 85.5-degree field of view, and Softlight LED flash. The secondary camera sports an 8-megapixel sensor and 120-degree wide-angle lens.
It will be available in Midnight Black, Moonlight White, and Rouge Red colour variants. All the three phones run on Android 8.0 Oreo, painted with ZenUI 5.0.
ASUS showcased all three smartphones at the event but has revealed the price only for the ZenFone 5Z. The Asus ZenFone 5Z 4GB RAM, 64GB inbuilt storage variant has been priced at 479 euros (roughly ₹38,400). However, the company did not provide the pricing of rest of the smartphones.
