Marvel’s Black Panther continues to live up to the hype with a third straight weekend at the top of the box office, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down.
It was another wonderful weekend for Wakanda, with Black Panther dominating the weekend box office for the third straight week to extend its epic theatrical run.
Director Ryan Coogler’s superhero story added another $65.7 million domestically, but the big story this week was the film’s worldwide ticket sales, which inched closer to that magical $900 million mark. When it does cross that milestone — which will likely happen this week — it will be the fifth film in Marvel’s cinematic universe to do so, joining franchise record-holder The Avengers, as well as Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Iron Man 3, and Captain America: Civil War.
Given that the film hasn’t opened yet in China, the world’s second-largest market, the sky’s the limit for Black Panther right now.
Although the continued success of Black Panther was the weekend’s biggest story, two new releases did manage to debut among the week’s top three films.
Jennifer Lawrence’s spy film Red Sparrow got a lukewarm response from critics — to the tune of a 50-percent approval rating on professional review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes — but a respectable “B” grade from audiences on polling site CinemaScore. The $43.5 million the movie earned worldwide puts it on a better pace than Charlize Theron’s recent spy film Atomic Blonde, and puts it in good shape based on its $69 million price tag.
The other new release was Eli Roth’s remake of vigilante classic Death Wish, which was slammed by critics, earning it a 15-percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It did win over crowds, however, with a surprisingly good “B+” grade from ticket-buying audience members. Despite this solid grade, the film only managed to bring in $13 million in U. S. theaters, so it could have some trouble crossing the marks it needs to hit.
The rest of the weekend’s top movies were all returning films.
The big question heading into this week is whether Disney’s adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time will be the film to dethrone Black Panther. It looks entirely possible, given the massive marketing campaign around A Wrinkle in Time and the positive buzz it’s receiving in the lead-up to its release. In any case, it might take a Disney movie to beat a Disney movie — but we’ll know for sure a week from now.
