The commanding officer at the scene of the Parkland, Fla. school shooting ordered initial responders to form a perimeter around the school.
The commanding officer at the scene of the Parkland, Fla. school shooting that killed 17 people ordered initial responders to form a perimeter around the school instead of telling them to enter the building and confront the gunman.
Capt. Jan Jordan gave the command, according to a partial Broward Sheriff’s Office log obtained by the Miami Herald.
Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said that office protocol and nationwide active-shooter procedures call for armed law enforcement officers to confront shooters immediately rather secure a scene.
The document suggests that the department mishandled its response to the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14.
Deputy Scot Peterson, who was stationed at the school, waited outside the building while gunman Nikolas Cruz sprayed bullets at students and faculty members.
Israel blasted Peterson for not entering the building.
He insists that Peterson — who resigned last week — was trained to have “killed the killer,” Israel told the Miami Herald.
BSO would not confirm that Jordan issued a stand-down order.
“If detectives had answers to all of the questions, then there would be no need for an investigation,” BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright told the Miami Herald.
A full version of the log, obtained by Fox News, shows that the shooting would have been over by the time Jordan issued the order.
Israel maintains that deputies still should have confronted the gunman.
Jordan is in the running for the police chief job in Tequesta, according to the Palm Beach Post.
