Los Angeles Chargers defensive tackle Corey Liuget visited Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Tuesday and donated $10,000 to the scholarship fund set up in Aaron Feis’ honor.
Liuget admitted that he isn’t sure he could have done the same as Feis, who stepped into the line of fire in a bid to save students when a gunman with a semi-automatic rifle entered the Parkland (Fla.) school on Feb. 14. Feis, an assistant coach and security guard, was shot and killed as he shielded two students.
“He gave his life for someone,” the 27-year-old Liuget said, via WSVN. “I don’t know, to be honest, if I’m built for that myself, you know? To be completely honest. If it isn’t my kids or maybe my wife, I’d probably… I don’t know if I’m built the way coach Feis was, and I just wanna tip my hat to him, his family and the sacrifice that he made on that day.”
Liuget, who is a Miami native, worked out with the football team and spoke to the players about the importance of life.
“I want them to know that life is bigger than what they’re facing right now and the times that they’re going through right now,” Liuget said. “And the stuff that they’re doing out here on the football field will definitely pay dividends.”
The Coach Aaron Feis Scholarship will go to a graduating member of the football team who exhibits characteristics representative of who Feis was and the traits he valued, Liuget said.
