From one Best Actress to another…
Frances McDormand has Julie Andrews ’ approval.
While talking to the Associated Press at the Raise Your Voice Health Institute concert on Tuesday, the “Sound of Music” icon praised this year’s Best Actress winner for her speech.
“To see all those women who had been nominated or had won standing up in the audience it was a very smart thing for her to do,” said Andrews, who took home the 1965 Best Actress Oscar for “Mary Poppins.”

“If I may be so honored to have all the female nominees in every category stand with me in this room tonight,” McDormand said on the stage. “Meryl, if you do it, everybody else will, come on,” she added, referring to Streep, who was sitting front row. “The filmmakers, the producers, the directors, the writers, the cinematographers, the composers, the songwriters, the designers, come on . .. Look around, look around.”
As for Time’s Up and women coming forward with stories of sexual harassment and inequality in Hollywood, Andrews said it’s been a longtime coming.
“Its way overdue but at least its happening and I couldn’t be more happy,” she said while chatting at Lincoln Center.
Also at the Raise Your Voice Health Institute event, which raised funds to restore speaking and singing ability for individuals who suffer from vocal disease or trauma, were Sam Smith, Keith Urban and Dr. Mehmet Oz.
