Michigan went to the Sweet 16 last season.
The Big Ten Tournament champions are headed to Wichita.
Michigan was awarded a No. 3 seed by the NCAA Tournament selection committee and will play No. 14 seed Montana on Thursday.
Michigan enters the Tournament with a 28-7 record. This is the first time in team history that the Wolverines have posted as many wins before the start of the Big Dance.
The Grizzlies, out of the Big Sky Conference are 26-7.
After going 13-5 in the Big Ten, Michigan won four games in four days to capture its second straight Big Ten Tournament title. The event concluded last Sunday, a week earlier than normal, meaning Thursday’s opener will be Michigan’s first game in 11 days.
This is Michigan’s seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in the past eight seasons and 28th overall. Last year, as a No. 7 seed, Michigan beat Oklahoma State and Louisville in dramatic fashion before losing by one point to Oregon.
Michigan won its lone national championship in 1989. The program has reached the Final Four six other times, losing in the championship in five of them. Michigan is 13-7 in Tournament games under current head coach John Beilein. Only once under Beilein has Michigan failed to win at least one game in the tourney — a first-round exit in 2012.
As of Thursday, Michigan was listed at 12/1 odds to win the national championship, behind just five other teams.
Tip-off times for all first-round matchups will be announced later Sunday.
